Vintage Phone Retrofitting

Transforming an old rotary phone into a modern iot connected device.

A hardware retrofit project that transforms a vintage rotary phone into a more modern connected device while preserving its original look and tactile experience.

The project explores how classic analog objects can be augmented with modern electronics without altering their physical identity. The original rotary dial, handset and mechanical components are reused, while the internal electronics are replaced with a custom system based on an ESP8266 microcontroller.
The rotary dial is read as an input device, allowing the phone to trigger digital functions such as network requests, IoT actions or custom interactions. The goal was to maintain the characteristic user experience of the rotary phone while enabling modern connectivity and programmability.

The project is fully documented on Hackaday.io and includes hardware design notes, firmware implementation and integration details.

Key aspects of the project include:

  • reverse engineering of the rotary dial mechanism
  • interfacing mechanical pulse dialing with a microcontroller
  • firmware development for ESP8266 in C++
  • integration of network connectivity and IoT features
  • hardware prototyping and electronic circuit design
  • documentation and open-source publication of the project
